Sri Lanka Marks Vesak Poya Day with Grand Celebrations, Showcasing Deep Buddhist Links with India
Sri Lanka celebrated Vesak Poya Day with nationwide religious observances, colourful lantern displays, traditional processions, and community service initiatives. The National Vesak Festival in Matara also featured the “Buddhist Heritage of India” exhibition, highlighting the deep spiritual and cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka through the teachings of Lord Buddha.
Cities, towns, and villages across the island nation were illuminated with colourful Vesak lanterns and decorative displays, transforming homes, streets, and public buildings into vibrant centres of celebration. More than two thousand community service centres offering free food and refreshments were organised throughout the country, reflecting the spirit of generosity and compassion associated with the occasion.
Traditional religious processions and devotional musical programmes also formed a significant part of the celebrations, drawing large gatherings of worshippers and visitors. The festivities highlighted Sri Lanka’s enduring Buddhist heritage and the continued relevance of Lord Buddha’s teachings in contemporary society.
Underscoring the deep civilisational and spiritual ties between India and Sri Lanka, a photo exhibition titled “Buddhist Heritage of India” was organised by the High Commission of India and the Consulate General of India in Hambantota. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake inaugurated the exhibition and addressed the opening ceremony of the National Vesak Festival.
The exhibition features sacred Buddhist sites in India, including Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar, highlighting the centuries-old spiritual and cultural connections between the two nations rooted in the teachings of Lord Buddha. The event serves as a reminder of the enduring bond shared by India and Sri Lanka through their common Buddhist heritage and historical links.
